We are working together to improve the process of preserving critical information about family photos in order to make them more valuable to the family history community. The technical term for this critical information is metadata: the who, what, where, when and how about a photo. Together, our group has developed a set of recommendations for providers in the photo software industry. These recommendations improve how the most relevant family history metadata is captured, transferred, and preserved. Our recommendations were carefully crafted in order to preserve and leverage what photo software is already designed to do. ...

This post in the When Disaster Strikes miniseries will offer a checklist of things to think about and steps to take for before, during, and after a disaster. The more you can do to prepare your family treasures for a disaster before it strikes, the better off you’ll be. However, we don’t always have the luxury of time or foresight. With this in mind, I’ve broken up the steps into three distinct ...

While (thankfully) everything turned out OK for my family, it did impart some lessons learned. In this post we’ll delve into the emotional preparation needed for when—not if—a disaster strikes and facing the loss of our family treasures as a consequence. Emotional Steps to Prepare for Disaster Before we can delve into preparation logistics there’s something we have to deal with first: ourselves. While the human mind can easily imagine disaster scenarios, it’s harder for us to channel those thoughts into actions. The first thing to do is sit ...

The shocking images of debris in the background while an exhausted human with a thousand-yard stare gestures to where their house used to be. It’s easy to think it will never happen to us, and yet we know from looking at the data that climate change is only getting worse. Cataclysmic disasters as a result of severe weather events are becoming an all-too-common occurrence. And let’s not forget it’s not just natural disasters we have to contend with. Disasters can come in many other forms such as: war, economic collapse, terrorism, overtourism, neglect, and time. The 2020 West Coast Fires I live in the Pacific Northwest, a region known for its ...
