Enhancing Family Photos with Metadata https://www.permanent.org/blog/enhancing-family-photos-with-metadata/ https://www.permanent.org/blog/enhancing-family-photos-with-metadata/#respond Mon, 29 Aug 2022 23:23:31 +0000 https://permanent.org/?p=4835 The Family History Metadata Working Group (FHMWG), Savemetadata.org, is a collaboration between leaders in the family history software industry. We are working together to improve the process of preserving critical information about family photos in order to make them more valuable to the family history community. The technical term for this critical information is metadata: the who, what, where, when and how about a photo. Together, our group has developed a set of recommendations for providers in the photo software industry. These recommendations improve how the most relevant family history metadata is captured, transferred, and preserved. Our recommendations were carefully crafted in order to preserve and leverage what photo software is already designed to do. ...

Stories unfold in pictures shared https://www.permanent.org/blog/stories-unfold-in-pictures-shared/ https://www.permanent.org/blog/stories-unfold-in-pictures-shared/#respond Wed, 04 May 2022 11:00:00 +0000 https://permanent.org/?p=4502 Where do family stories come from?  How do they come to you? Were they shared? Created by you? Or based on personal experience, researched documented fact, or maybe a piece of pure fiction? Or that dreaded gossip? With family stories, it’s been my experience that siblings, cousins and extended family may have completely different stories to tell, even if they’re about the same event, moment in time or an individual. Take my good old Uncle Bert and a beautiful old photograph  We all have different opinions about family trees and the like. Some people just don’t care about ancestry, others are slightly intrigued, and some are downright obsessive and enthusiastic. When I first shared a ...

Searching for Lost Stories Together https://www.permanent.org/blog/searching-for-lost-stories-together/ https://www.permanent.org/blog/searching-for-lost-stories-together/#respond Thu, 14 Apr 2022 22:57:29 +0000 https://permanent.org/?p=4493 Inside every genealogist is a storyteller waiting to be set free When I first embarked on my family tree journey two years ago, I began with a faded Xeroxed copy of some extensive research done in the 1980s by a cousin, twice removed. With the family tree in hand, I dug around online for my ancestors. A name kept popping up, Myrna. It was her family name that was familiar to me, I’d seen it before. I reached out to Myrna, (as I do…) knocking on virtual doors, and low and behold we share 3x great grandparents.  Connecting the dots and finding context A traditional family tree is, in its purest form, names, and dates on ...

Digitizing is great for sharing and preserving, but handing the real thing can be more magical than looking at a digital image.  Physically Storing Your Collection Digitizing alone will not preserve your documents. It is important to care for the physical materials as well.  Environment: One of the easiest ways to help protect your collections is to make sure your materials are in a stable environment with limited temperature and humidity fluctuations. Paper is affected by the moisture in the air, and if it is housed in ...

FamilyHistory with Permanent.org Part 3 of 4: Digitizing Your Collection https://www.permanent.org/blog/familyhistory/ https://www.permanent.org/blog/familyhistory/#respond Mon, 04 Oct 2021 20:01:56 +0000 https://www.permanent.org/?p=4096 Digitizing Your Collection Welcome back! We are on step three of our journey to get our family collections organized, digitized, and accessible to our friends and family. Step number one was to organize and arrange our documents to best reflect the collection and those using it. Step number two was describing the collections to get them ready for upload to Permanent.org. Now, onto step number three: It is finally time to digitize those documents.  Digitizing Your Collection When it comes to digitizing your collection, you should think about whether everything is worth being digitized and available for family or the public. Some materials might be worthy to keep, but not something everyone will want to ...
